How Intoxicated Drivers are Changing Lives and Families Throughout Texas

According to the Texas Department of Transportation, the last deathless day on Texas roadways was November 7, 2000. Nearly 22 years later, The Lone Star State is still grappling with preventable fatal traffic accidents caused by multiple sources — including drunk driving.

Last year, there were 1,077 people killed in Texas motor vehicle traffic crashes where a driver was under the influence of alcohol, according to the Texas Motor Vehicle Traffic Crash Facts. That number reflects 24% of the total number of people killed in motor vehicle traffic crashes throughout the state.

As Texas residents ourselves, our Houston car accident attorneys and support staff at the Hollingsworth Law Firm see the impact drunk driving has on our communities. Whether you were injured in a crash caused by an intoxicated driver or have tragically lost a loved one in these preventable collisions, we want to help you hold the negligent driver liable for your complete damages.

What is Texas Doing About Its Drunk Driving Problem?

The Houstonia Magazine reported that Texas was consistently listed in the top five worst states for drunk driving. Unfortunately, the statistics back up their claims.

In response to the excessive drunk driving statistics throughout Texas, including an average of 90,000 people arrested for driving under the influence each year, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the Texas Department of Transportation announced the beginning of the “Drive Sober. No Regrets” drunk driving prevention campaign.

The campaign is a component of the #EndTheStreakTX grassroots campaign encouraging drivers to make safer choices while behind the wheel, such as never texting while driving, wearing a seatbelt, driving the speed limit, and never driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

As part of the campaign, Texas law enforcement will be increasing patrols to identify and arrest drunk drivers.

According to TxDOT, one person is killed every 7 hours and 57 minutes on Texas roadways due to an alcohol-related traffic accident. In addition to the 1,077 people who were killed in drunk driving collisions last year, 2,560 were severely injured because someone decided to get behind the wheel after drinking.

These crashes are 100% preventable and can have serious physical, emotional, and financial consequences for those who are injured, and the families those who are killed leave behind.
