ToggleThe National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has designated each April as National Distracted Driving Awareness Month to help shine a light on the dangers associated with drivers taking their hands off the wheel, eyes off the road, or focus away from the task of driving.
The Texas Department of Transportation is helping to raise awareness locally with a Talk. Text. Crash. campaign that highlights the dangers other drivers, motorcyclists, and pedestrians face when motorists are distracted behind the wheel.
Our Houston car accident attorneys have witnessed firsthand how devastating distracted driving can be, and how it impacts not only our injured clients, and families who have lost their loved ones, but our Texas communities as a whole.
Together, we can help put an end to these dangerous behaviors, so everyone can make it home safely.
What is the TxDOT Talk? Text. Crash. Campaign?
Texas has a traffic crash rate above the national average, and distracted driving — namely in the form of cellphone use behind the wheel — is making matters worse.
To help reduce distracted driving accidents, Texas traffic safety officials are emphasizing the state’s Talk. Text. Crash. campaign to coincide with the NHTSA’s National Distracted Driving Awareness Month.
The campaign seeks to educate drivers about distracted driving and help Texas motorists develop strategies to avoid this type of negligent driving behavior.
Last year, according to TxDot Crash Facts, nearly 1 in 5 crashes on Texas roads were caused by a distracted driver. In those crashes, 431 people were killed, and 2,934 were seriously injured,
While texting is a leading focus of the campaign, multiple distractions can lead to catastrophic accidents throughout Texas.
They may include, but are not limited to:
- Adjusting onboard electronics, including stereos, entertainment features, and GPS.
- Daydreaming.
- Eating and drinking.
- Grooming.
- Reaching for fallen items in the vehicle.
- Talking to passengers.
November 7, 2000, was the last deathless day on Texas roadways, TxDOT says. Although distracted driving is not the only cause of collisions throughout the state, focusing solely on the task of driving can help prevent the countless lives that are impacted by these crashes each year.
