Why Childhood Fatalities are Far Too Common Throughout Texas

At the Hollingsworth Law Firm, our Houston personal injury attorneys know how difficult it is to lose a loved one to negligence in Texas. When the loss of life is that of a child, the trauma is often too much for parents — and the public — to bear.

Last year, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reported that throughout the country, 3,529 children between the ages of 1-4, and 5,623 children between the ages of 5-9 lost their lives. The CDC explained that mortality data showed the leading cause of death in those age groups were unintentional injuries, including firearm-related deaths, vehicle collisions, and drownings.

Our Harris County personal injury lawyers know that losing a child is life-changing and that losing a child to negligence is unbearable. If you lost a child because of another person or party’s negligence, we want to help you pursue the liable party for the justice your family deserves.

Here is what parents need to know about accidents that claim the lives of children and adults throughout the state of Texas.

How Many Children Lose Their Lives in Motor Vehicle Accidents Each Year?

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported 38,824 traffic fatalities throughout the U.S. last year. Of the total, 1,093, or 3%, were children ages 14 and younger — up from 1,064 fatalities the previous year. Of the 1,093 children killed in traffic crashes, 229, or 21%, were killed in alcohol-impaired-driving crashes.

In addition, an estimated 139,042 children were injured in traffic crashes over the same period.

On average, three children were killed, and an estimated 380 children were injured every day in traffic crashes across the country.

Other motor vehicle-related deaths last year included:

  • Of the 6,516 pedestrian traffic fatalities, 177, or 3%, were children.
  • Of the 938 bicycle traffic fatalities, 48, or 5%, were children.

When impaired, speeding, or distracted drivers are negligently operating their vehicles on our Texas highways, city streets, and residential neighborhoods, people are going to get hurt. Sadly, children are often involved in these preventable tragedies.

If your child has been injured or killed in a vehicle collision caused by a negligent driver, you do not have to face the insurance company alone. We want to help you pursue the best outcome available for your case, so you can help your child get their life back or take the time you need to grieve. Drownings are Another Common Cause of Death in Children Throughout Texas

The CDC reported that more children ages 1–4 die from drowning than any other cause of death except birth defects in the United States. For children ages 1–14, drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional injury death after motor vehicle crashes.

For every child who dies from drowning, another eight receive emergency department care for non-fatal drowning. More than 40% of drownings treated in emergency departments require hospitalization or transfer for further care — compared with 8% for all unintentional injuries.

Drowning injuries can cause brain damage and other serious outcomes, including long-term disability.

If your child was under another person’s care, including a neighbor, friend, family member, daycare, or school where a drowning or near drowning occurred, you have the legal right to pursue the liable party for your full financial recovery — and to help ensure this tragedy does not happen to another child.
